Drop In Centre The purpose of the Drop in Centre is to help children victims of sexual abuse and exploitation, to re-integrate in their social life, their education and professional livelihood. The target group of the centre is composed of children less than 18 years of age, who are sexually abused, raped or found to be in prostitution. The Drop in Centre is operated and managed by the Mauritius Family Planning Association. Staffing is as follows; an Executive Director who is assigned with the overall responsibility of the project, as Senior Programme Officer who is responsible to supervise and monitor activities and a Liaison Officer who is in charge of the day-to-day running of the centre. Procedures that should be followed when registering such cases: When a case of a sexual abuse or prostitution is reported directly to the Drop in Centre, the case has to be registered at the centre itself and a file should be opened for each new case. If the case has been reported initially at the Family Support Bureau, the child’s file will be opened at the FSB itself, and eventually the case will be referred to the Drop in Centre for the follow up activities and re-integration of the child. Then, the case along with the file has to be referred to the Child Welfare Officer, whose task is to investigate upon the situation and needs of the child. According to these needs, immediate actions have to be taken by the CWO. For example, if the child is highly traumatized, he/she is referred to the psychologist and the child’s file is now handed to the psychologist. Or, if the child needs the consultation of a doctor, the CWO refers the case to the doctor positioned at the Drop in Centre. After that the necessary actions have been taken and that the legal aspect or medical aspect has been resolved, the file goes back to the initial point of registration, may it be at the Drop in Centre or the FSB. If at that point the case is at the FSB, it will be referred to the Drop in Centre for the follow-up activities and re-integration of the child. Follow-up activities:- The Drop in Centre should offer activities for the child, depending upon his/her age and his/her case history, that would help him/her overcome the trauma undergone and re-build his/her self-esteem. These activities (done at an individual level first, then in group activity) that would demand psychological involvement necessitate the guide to the psychologist. Hence, the effect of these therapies (individual and group) would be closely monitored and focused towards the betterment of the child. Entries of the results should be clearly stated in the child’s file. The Liaison Officer should identify clubs or centres in the locality of the child victim where be/she would undergo a community and social life. The child will be encouraged to engage in one of these clubs, for example, a Youth Club, Football Club or Leisure Centre. The leaders or the ones in charge of these clubs should be contacted, and put aware of the plan of the Drop in Centre to integrate a victim of sexual abuse or exploitation to their club. Therefore, confidentiality over the child’s situation is vital among the group he/she will be engaged in. The leaders Or the ones in charge of these clubs should be ready to cooperate upon a close follow-up of the child’s participation, involvement and behaviours into the adhered club, and to report every statement to the Drop in Centre. Entries of the results and evolution into the club should e clearly stated in the child’s file. Any other activities that prone for the re-integration of the child or is in the course of the follow-up actions should be stated in the child's file, as well as the performance of the child. |
